Starting with convalescent service, the hospital has grown into an acute general hospital with 873 beds (as at 28 February 2001) and about 1,500 staff providing Tsuen Wan and surrounding districts with acute, infirmary, rehabilitation and convalescent service.

In addition to providing 24 hours' Accident & Emergency service, Yan Chai Hospital also provides different kinds of specialty services and allied health services. The hospital is also a referral centre for ear, nose and throat service in Hong Kong. Besides, the setting up of Day Surgery Centre, Haemodialysis Satellite Centre, Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit have also served to provide a comprehensive range of services to community. There is also a polyclinic providing general and specialist outpatient consultations.
