The Eastern Harbour Crossing was a private project opened in 1989. The 1,870m tunnel comprises 15 immersed tubes, each being 120m long, 36m wide, 9.75m deep and weighing 42,000 tonnes. It links Quarry Bay to Cha Kwo Ling by road and rail. In late 1987, Kumagai Gumi awarded GEC HK the majority of the mechanical and electrical subcontracts for the Eastern Harbour Crossing project in Hong Kong. As GEC’s retained advisors, JRP contributed to the successful award of these contracts by providing pre-tender, tender preparation and negotiation assistance for the road tunnel ventilation contract EM-1 and the MTRC tunnel environmental control system contract EM-9. The Group subsequently provided ongoing technical assistance to review design development, to clarify interfaces with other services and to assist in the preparation of testing and commissioning procedures. JRP’s responsibility included the computer simulation and system design verification to ensure acceptable environmental conditions in the rail tunnels.
